Reading ba va and dha.
Recently, and not for the first time, I received an email asking for help with distinguishing between the Siddhaṃ syllables ba and va. Vinod asks:How to differentiate the Siddham Letters dha, ba, va - They seem so similar in shape. I get too confused. For most of them Time I differentiate them by Context. It gets even more confusing if the CBETA Siddham font is used.
Vinod was trying to see the mantras on this image and he has struck the problem that if one doesn't already know, or can figure it out from the context, it is almost impossible to know whether ba or va is intended
On the left are my way of writing these. From top to bottom ba, va and dha.
Dha is the easiest to distinguish as it has no head. I do slightly exaggerate the top of the right-hand stroke making it quite prominent, but it is quite different from the wavey line that marks the other two. In brush style sometimes the right-hand stroke curves to the right at the top instead of to the left as I do it.
Now ba is distinguished by the loop meeting the stem in an upwards direction, while va ought to be still going downwards when it meets the stem.
Unfortunately Chinese brush calligraphy often seems to make no distinction between ba and va.
